Trans fats: All “you need†to know
Published March 18th, 2007 in HealthWell, I met Richard for the first time yesterday at the Trans Fat Forum, organised by HPB. And indeed just as Richard says, its all “YOU NEED” to know, not all there is to know. My main disappointment is the lack of information about the issues surrounding trans fat and what is happening in different regions of the world. You can probably get more information about trans fat from Richard’s stop-trans-fat site, then from this forum. Although, I must agree with Richard there we did learn something new, not from HPB, but from the Deputy President of Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association.
All in all, the forum is not really about trans fat, their emphasize seems to be more on saturated fats, rather than trans fat and trying very hard to paint an evil picture of saturated fats.
Anyway, Richard reported about this event under “Trans fats: All “you need†to know“.
Singapore’s first public forum on trans fats, presented today (March 17) by the Health Promotion Board and Consumers’ Association, was titled “Trans fats: All you need to knowâ€.
I highlight and emphasise the phrase “you need†because, it seems to me, the organisers have decided that we need to know just a little.
I thought a more appropriate theme for the forum should have been “Trans fats: All there is to know.â€
But that wasn’t the case. Saltwetfish, who was seated next to me (and we met for the first time) at the forum, was expecting an update on the trans fat scene around the world. Nothing of that sort was presented.
Instead, the first two presentations were… yawn!… just the usual stuffs.
Please do drop by his blog to comment and educate yourself where HPB refuses to.
A new website, cuttransfat.org is committed to the “voluntary” reduction or elimination of trans fats in our diet. The site also links to numerous articles offering differing views on the subject.
The site is also attempting to compile a list of restaurants and chains that are actively eliminating or reducing trans fats in their menus.
This site really is about trans fat.

I think trans fat is an important issue and can be considered together in a balanced approach to living a life of wellness in mind, body and spirit.
