Life on Earth
Published February 24th, 2006 in About Earth, Society, SpiritualityThe BBC documentary, Life on Earth, attempts to trace the path of evolution on Earth from the tiny algae and bateria to dinosaurs and finally man.
In the last of the series, David Attenborough commented:
“The last of this series was focused on entirely one specied, MAN. … It may have given the impression that man somehow is the ultimate triumph of evolution. All those thousands and millions of years have no purpose but to put man on Earth.
There is no scientific evidence or what so ever for such a believe. There is not reason to believe that man’s stay on Earth should be any longer than that of the dinosaurs. He may have learned to control his environment, pass on information from one generation to another, but the very forces of evolution that brought him into existence here in the African plains are still at the work and so in the rest of the world. And if man were to disappear for whatever reasons, there is doubtless somewhere some small unobstrusive creature will cease the perfect opportunity and with a spurt of evolution take man’s place”
Such truism will be a hard pill to swallow for many people, because we are taught from very young that man has this special place. Such are their believes that should man cease to exist, they would think that the Earth would cease to rotate and the universe will go with them. Such are their believes that says man are masters of the world and the animals and the rest of the world are there to provide for them. For such a believe is akin to that of racism, but at its worst and its called specism.
