Au naturelle

Many times, we associate things made by man as man-made and other things as natural. But what exactly is nature-made? A bird using twigs to build its nests, and so do humans who uses stone, brick and metal to build skyscrapers. Can that be said to be unnatural compared to a bird’s nest or a beavers dam?

There are some who argues that we should not interfere with the natural or animal world and should let whatever happens happen, for example, leaving beached whales alone or allow animals to extinct. However, the counter arguement is that man is part of nature and man’s compassion is also part of it. So helping out becomes an act of nature too, isn’t it?

Of course, there are a lot of instances where overdo what is necessary and, for example, instead of letting a redundant species to extinct “naturally”, we keep them alive as if we really need too. Let’s not forget that the extinction of dinosaurs and many other species made it possible for for the human species to come about, although some religions obviously does not agree to this assertion.

I feel that this arguement about natural or unnatural is nought when you look at nature from the perspective of existence of this universe. All that exists in this universe is part of nature and has to be, whatever evolved, what ever we build or destroy is also part of this path of nature. After all, how can anything not-of-nature or “unnatural” can begin to exist in nature? Can we really name anything as unnatural in this existence? However, such arguements are also often a big excuse for some people to be either indifferent or remain uncompassionate.

So what really is this differentiation between man-made and nature-made all about? I think the main issue is co-existence and recyclability.
